I think that breast feeding is a wonderful thing. The problem that I had with it is THE EXACT opposite of the problems that everyone else here seems to have. Mainly, I was made to feel guilty for not breast feeding. So many disappointing ‘tut tuts’ from other women when they found out that I did not breast feed. “Don’t you know it’s healthiest for your baby?” “Don’t you know your depriving your baby of nutrients that formula cannot give?” As a new mom (and as I think all new moms can attest to), I was made to feel guilty about every little decision I made with respect to raising my kid. So, I think I speak for all of us when I say “Back the fuck off.” We all raise our children differently and guess what, for the majority of them, they turn out great. Breast feed them until they’re 5 - I don’t care. Don’t breast feed them, I don’t care. Just let us moms do the best we can with what scarce resources and training we have. We all promise to try our best (or is it breast?).
You’re right, and I’m sorry if I implied that anyone was doing it wrong. My point, which I can see I didn’t make very well, was that I’ve seen a lot of people who quickly say no way, it’s not natural, we’re not going to do it at all. There are lots of myths out there. “Breast fed babies don’t put on weight.” Stuff like that. That has nothing to do with having decided not to do it because it doesn’t work for you.
However, I go with what hoppypoppy said:
Breastfeeding is normal and natural, as long as everyone involved (READ: the mother and child, not anyone else) are comfortable with it and it works for them.So if it doesn’t work for Mom or Child, there you have it.
I apologize for mistakenly implying anything otherwise.
Oh, no, no, no. I wasn’t talking about you. I think what you said was great. You never implied that one MUST breast feed. You simply stated how it is natural and good. I absolutely agree with that. I was speaking about all the people who butt their noses into raising YOUR child. Let me take a stand here: I agree with all the points you have all made. I was just trying to point out that women on both ends are made to feel guilty about it.
